MailChimp Ends MageMonkey Support: What’s Next?

MageMonkey MailChimp Magento

MailChimp recently announced that they will no longer offer support for their MageMonkey Magento extension. This announcement has come out-of-the-blue and is something of a shock to many businesses that rely on MageMonkey to connect Magento to MailChimp for crucial business functions. MailChimp’s official announcement reads:

“As of March 4, 2017, the MageMonkey integration for the Magento 1 platform will no longer be supported. We strongly encourage all MageMonkey users to make the switch to MailChimp for Magento by this date to avoid any service interruptions.

Our MailChimp for Magento integration now includes powerful e-commerce features—product recommendations, abandoned cart automation, and improved e-commerce endpoints that use API 3.0 to sync customer data to MailChimp—so you can send targeted email and sell more stuff.

Visit our Knowledge Base to learn how to disconnect MageMonkey and connect MailChimp for Magento.”

MailChimp’s announcement comes with a clear new direction in the form of their ‘MailChimp for Magento’ plugin that appears to supersede MageMonkey and has understandably become the singular focus of their developers’ attention.

What is Mailchimp for Magento?

MailChimp for Magento is a new extension available from MailChimp free-of-charge (though applicable fees for MailChimp itself still apply). Its role is to take the place of its predecessor while adding new features and functionality. For businesses that are already committed to using MailChimp as part of their processes, the switch from MageMonkey to MailChimp for Magento is all but a forgone conclusion. The plugin’s key features are advertised as being able to:

  • Send personalized product recommendations to individual customers in just a few clicks.
  • Follow up with, delight, and re-engage your customers using our preset customer lifecycle automation workflows.
  • Create targeted campaigns that get the right messages in front of the right customers at the right time.
  • Monitor our robust campaign reports to measure ROI, see what’s working, and learn how you can get better.

With over 12 million users of MailChimp itself, it is clear that this changeover will impact a significant number of businesses. If your business is currently using MageMonkey, it makes perfect sense to switch to MailChimp for Magento so that you can continue to enjoy both the latest features and continued developer support. If you are unsure of what to do, we recommend you talk to us as soon as possible.
